COPACABANA PALACE THEATER I

The concept of the project for the set of areas that compose the Copacabana Palace Theater is based on valuing the architectural space through its memory and identity, in a dialogue with the hotel’s contemporaneity and innovative spirit arising from its foundation.

The fluid space of the lobby is the starting point and inspiration for subsequent areas to be thought of in such a way as to incorporate the evidence of time in their realization, highlighting layers of textures and compositional patterns that prioritize handcrafting in the tradition of the great craftsmen of the eclectic period, combined with materials of natural beauty and the Brazilian tradition of woodworking.

Respecting the premises of architectural interventions dictated by lPHAN and other agencies for the protection of historical and cultural heritage, in addition to the new accessibility and safety standards, the project also sought an investigation of idle spaces resulting from the structural system executed after the fire that destroyed the original theatre, a redefinition of the volume of the audience’s box with the incorporation of lower and upper boxes.
